Beards, they are everywhere; in all shapes and sizes, past and present, clean and dirty. Today marks World Beard Day, so we thought this article was fitting.
Beards have been around since the beginning of time and are not going anywhere soon. They have sprouted up since the dawn of time for many reasons; from the most political, to an attempt to stand out in a crowd, or naturally, for the lack of motivation towards constant shaving. Almost every man can grow a beard to some extent, yet the decision can often come with many layers of a deeper meaning.
Historically, beards have been used to help define ones social-economic status as the beard translates into a prestigious, competent and masculine identity. Beards have been used to establish your rank amongst men; let's look at some of the great bearded men throughout history – Abraham Lincoln, Sigmund Freud, Santa Claus, George Clooney, Shakespeare, Hemingway, and James Harden, have all rocked luscious beards that helped to define who they are. The first thing that comes to mind when you think of all these bearded gentlemen is greatness. Each of these men is a master of their craft, and their beard is a unique part of their personality, leaving behind an image of their masculinity and legend status that is carved in history.
Now there are many other more straightforward reasons and benefits to growing a beard other than screaming your male dominance. It may be the right of passage from a boy to a man, or maybe to avoid skin irritation that occurs during shaving. Both very popular motivators. We know we were excited to experiment and express my individualised style when first able to grow a beard. All and any types of facial hair styles were tried out until what we landed on what worked best – and it is recommended you also to experiment until you see what fits well with our facial structure and style. What worked well for Clooney, might not work for you! However, we must tell you, this trial and error with beard styles and lengths lead me to discover the many growing pains of a beard. This new understanding and lack of ambition towards shaving have brought us to hairier pastures.
Other reasons for growing a beard can be more symbolic. Perhaps to represent your personal growth and you choose not to shave or trim until you have entirely evolved into the final product you wish to be; hiding behind the beard until the world is ready. What we are trying to say here is that the beard can tell the story of your journey; whether it’s a real journey across the country or world - or maybe a personal journey, your beard will always be there to help you through it.
Whichever reason you decide to grow your beard, you will not be disappointed with the outcome. It takes a lot of patience, compassion, and dedication; all of which are exceptional characteristics of a real leader in society. It will come with its ups and downs, however, with the right help and guidance from all of the bearded brothers around the world, you too can be living the Always Bearded Lifestyle.
